Which Titian Studio pieces were sold in 1961? (Auckland Museum - a photo taken off a photocopy) I was thrilled to come across a 1961 G R Newgoods Distributors brochure when I met the lovely curator from Auckland Museum's ceramic department earlier this year. The brochure proudly states, 'Sole N.Z. Distributors of Titian Pottery.' This post focuses on one column in the catalogue. I promise I'll write about the other columns of products in future posts. Excuse the blurry photo. As the Auckland Museum only has a photocopy, I've taken a photo from that. Maybe the owner of the original brochure will get int touch to let me get a better image. Wholesalers G.R. Newgoods Ltd were based at 60 Hobson St, opposite the big Farmers Trading company in Auckland's CBD. The company started in 1949 and were the first distributors of Sherwood and Titian products. It was Newgoods who gave the English Beswick catalogue to Cameron asking him to replicate some of the designs for them

Titian Studio's iconic New Zealand souvenir piece. Original Wahine Jug (S.106) Cam Brown jnr related this story, as told by his brother Chris. It came to light after Chris saw a promotional segment on television where they were interviewing Cordys owner/auctioneer, Andrew Grigg. A couple of Wahine jugs were included in the upcoming auction of Ngaire Hart’s kiwiana collection. 26 th May 2020 Cordys Catalogue – The Ngaire Hart Estate Collection Cordys in house video on Facebook - The Ngaire Hart Estate Collection Every Christmas the Brown family set off on trips around New Zealand. It was in 1958 whilst driving through Opotiki on the east coast that the story unfolds. The navigator on these trips was Dorothy. On one occasion Cam Jnr remembers peeking over his mother’s shoulder to see she was holding the map upside down. After that he’d wondered how they ever found their destinations! They were driving through the main shopping street when Cameron Snr spotted an old Māori   woma

A Pansy for Good Thoughts

Image
Pansy flowers evoke happy childhood memories of my Nana's garden . Looking into this phrase, pansies relate to loving thoughts, remembrance. They are February's birth flower. I have happy memories of my Nana's flower gardens. I remember the velvety petalled pansies with their 'painted' orange, yellow, violet and burgundy faces lined up along the narrow concrete path as I pedalled past on my trike. They appeared to nod with happiness just like my Nana's face when I visited. She loved her flower garden especially the perfumed stock, daphne, sweet peas and old English roses. I almost get a hint of their perfume while I'm writing this post. Whenever I see pansies my thoughts go back to the fun times at Nana's house on Albert Road in Riverhead.   Cameron Brown created many wall vase designs, each one individual in design and colourings. He enjoyed designing the moulds but his passion was the glaze combinations. This is evident with the pansy wall vases. It w

My First Piece of Titian

Everyone has a story about how their collections started.  B.105 - Giant Clam Shell Vase (My very first piece of Titian) My Titian Studio story began when hubby and I were on holiday in Nelson. I found my Clam Shell Vase when I was having a poke around in a 'hold your breath' secon d hand shop. It caught my eye sitting in amongst a collection of other vases. Bending over awkwardly, so I didn't knock over a pile of stacked books with my bottom, I reached over the other vases to pick it up. Like all the other vases it was full of scratched saucers which I then had to find a space for. I carefully popped the saucers down beside me on the limited carpeted space where I'd been crouching. Finally, I was able to get a decent look at it.  It was stunning, even under the dust I could see the colours. I wanted it! The Titian Studio Ware sticker wasn't one I'd ever seen before. I don't mind stickers on pieces but since this vase only had numbering on the base it wo
