J is for Jugs (Just Not Plain or Ordinary Jugs!)

 How many Jugs do you have?

Titian Studio Gurgle Jug - Iridescent Orange

The Gurgle Jug came in four magically iridescent glazes; orange, pink, purple and crimson. They were made at Takanini, and again at Drury under the Aquila brand name.

Not all jugs are created equal.... or plain. Titian Studio produced a huge range of variously shaped jugs including, milk jugs, Egyptian styled jugs, vases called jugs, Toby jugs and purely decorative jugs. They were glazed in various colours, specialist glazes, white, or had transfers* (in-house) or decals (imported) attached.

The Browns sold their products to wholesalers including G.R. Newgoods, (Ross) Presley Products and Paramount Trading, but also to big chain stores such as Farmers Trading Coy. The Paramount Jugs are coded PJ.100 & PJ.101.

The PJ.100 jug above has a slip cast pink body with the outside glazed in black lace. The handle is as fragile and delicate as it looks. 

J.104 - Swan Milk Jugs

In a G.R. Newoods advertising brochure from 1961 they advertised the miniature J.104 swan jugs, the elegant J.106 (either coloured or white), and the J.107 set of three sized jugs. In other advertising I've read about a Pelican jug. I do wonder if this is it.

Below is an example of the J.107 shape. Always hard to get an idea of the size of a piece from a photo. It would be great to have three lined up as a comparison.



J.107 - Jug

Some jugs don't have product codes on the base, so you're having to rely on recognising shapes and glazes. This handled jug is glazed in Ruby Lustre with the Wheat Sheaf decoration. If you're lucky they may have a Presley Ware sticker still attached. I've noticed the Presley Ware pieces generally have specialised glazes.

Did you know that Titian produced a fridge jug? Below are examples of the smaller FJ.300 and the bigger FJ.500. These examples has imported decals on both sides.  


FJ.500 & F.300 Fridge Jugs

A collector queried on the Titian Studio Facebook page if 'Cambridge' jugs were made by Titian. They were made at the Henderson factory. The product code is J.300. The Cambridge range was sold through Farmers Trading Company. After 1969 the shape was used by Crown Lynn and the product code was replaced with the four digit numbers.

Another shape taken over by Crown Lynn is the 512 jug, which came in three sizes. (-1/-2/-3). It was produced at Titian's Henderson and Takanini factories. When Crown Lynn took over Titian Studio it began using this shape adding the four digit product codes. Some examples have Titian written in script on the base along with the four digits.

The last jug I'd like to show you was produced at the Takanini factory. They are so funky and have a 1960s look about them compared to the 1950s Cambridge range. This is the only piece I have of the set which includes cups, saucers, jugs, sugar pots, salt and pepper shakers.

From 1971 the Cameron and Dorothy broke away from Crown Lynn and along with Cam Jnr and wife Beverley they set up Orzel Industries in Drury. I'm sorry I can't show you more Orzel examples which include the Adelaar range. The ice jug in particular has a clever innovation to stop the ice cubes splooshing into your drink. Along with well known beer tankards, there are 1 litre beer jugs to match. Another jug with a the lovely lattice work pattern was designed by Hemara Hemara and is particularly striking on the jugs.

You're nearly at the end. Have you noticed how different all the jug handles are? Nothing plain here!

When I started writing this blog, I thought it would be easy, breezy. But when I searched 'Jug' in my photo archives, oh dear, I'd forgotten how many they made. It may look orderly but I struggled to put the information into an understandable and readable order.

*Transfers and Decals are basically the same thing, however I've separated them into two categories. Silk screen transfers are images made in-house by Titian staff. Decals are imported images sold to Titian by salesman representing English companies. It makes it easier for me to explain the differences. This is why you'll see the same decals on various ceramics.

Extra information. 

Crown Lynn took over Titian Studio in 1969. They retained the name in different versions, 'Titian Pottery Kitchenware' and 'Titianware'. Neither names are connected to Titian Studio and the products indentified with these names are Crown Lynn products.

    I have PJ100 in white and in the crazy pink glaze. Such beautiful fragile handles. Maybe they got put safely in the china cabinet!

    It's a wonder some of the fragile piece have survived over 50 years. Thank goodness previous owners have cared for and appreciated them as much as we do.

WV.104 - Swoose Wall Vase

So what exactly is a Swoose? Prototype Swoose  - from the collection of Jack* & Rose Brown The yellow Swoose Wall Vase is heavy and chunky indicating the slip was left in the mould for longer than necessary. Also, the glaze is excessively thick. The reverse has three raised firing feet and a keyhole hanging hole, the same as the Sherwood Gainsborough Blue Boy and Pinkie Wall Vase. At one of Dave’s last visits to his friend, they chuckled whilst reminiscing over their long friendship and their time in the pottery industry. Cam Jnr quietly listened to their great memories. Both men died in 2002, only a few weeks apart. They had worked at Crown Lynn together in 1948/49 and became great friends. Dave was Crown Lynn’s chief design artist. It's an Itsy Bitsy Spider Vase

 Look away now if you don't like spiders! Sherwood Spider Vase - Side one The original spider vases, with the hand-painted black spider, were made during the Sherwood era , sometime between 1949 and 1954 at Waitakere. A rather realistic spider waits patiently for its next meal on a web strung between two branches. Pinecones sit at the base of this triangular vase.  Why do I like these vases? They remind me of webs sparkling with dew at dawn in our native garden we planted over twenty years ago. I try to be aware of them not only for their beauty, but because they're soooo sticky if you walk into one at head height. Never been one for spiders though, especially the huntsman that come in unexpectedly through our windows. I've only briefly met a white tail spider and that was inside the hood of my raincoat I'd just put on. Danny spotted it and told me, 'Stand Still!!
