Who can resist a butterfly? There's the distinctive orange and black of the Monarchs floating gracefully on a breeze. The red and gold of our native Red Admiral* and the small blue hued or copper coloured moths drifting across fields of long grass. They remind me of lazy childhood Christmases spent on the Coromandel Peninsula. And school holidays riding on the back of trailers, hauled by noisy tractors at Puhoi. A time of eeling, making hay forts and looking for frogs beside an overgrown fish pond. Mum hated frogs!! 

*The New Zealand red admiral (Vanessa gonerilla) is a butterfly endemic to New Zealand. Its Māori name is kahukura, which means "red cloak". (wikipedia.org)

B-103 Butterfly Vase

Titian Studio designed, and slip cast stand-up butterfly vases and butterfly wall vases. These stand-up vases were made between 1957 - 1971 and are beautifully hand sprayed in various glazes front and back, with some finished in lustre. The body and antennae are hand-painted. Some butterflies have extra decorations on the wings. As was popular in the sixties you'll find them also glazed in white. Such a wonderful way to have summertime memories at home with butterflies all year round.

Anatomically correct with the three distinct parts; head with antennae, thorax with six legs, and the abdomen. The forewings (big upper wings) and the hindwings (lower wings) are impressed with veins. If you look closely, you can see slight variations in the moulds of where the antennae and wing veins finish. Some designs incorporate an ‘eye’ decoration on the wings. Above the head is what appears to be three flower petals.

The base of these vases may have Titian Studio written in italics and the code B-103 impressed into them with a foot ring around the outside. However, some have no markings at all and have a flat base. The 'B' actually denotes bowl. 


Being so easily recognisable by their shape due to no other maker, English or otherwise, designing such a fabulous vase, they stand out as being one of Titian’s special pieces.

  One vase shape in multiple glazes B.102 Grey Stone with Wheat decoration The raised ear of wheat was incorporated into various mould designs. The wheat image was carefully wiped to reveal the white body underneath. WV.104 - Swoose Wall Vase

So what exactly is a Swoose? Prototype Swoose  - from the collection of Jack* & Rose Brown The yellow Swoose Wall Vase is heavy and chunky indicating the slip was left in the mould for longer than necessary. Also, the glaze is excessively thick. The reverse has three raised firing feet and a keyhole hanging hole, the same as the Sherwood Gainsborough Blue Boy and Pinkie Wall Vase. At one of Dave’s last visits to his friend, they chuckled whilst reminiscing over their long friendship and their time in the pottery industry. Cam Jnr quietly listened to their great memories. Both men died in 2002, only a few weeks apart. They had worked at Crown Lynn together in 1948/49 and became great friends. Dave was Crown Lynn’s chief design artist. It's an Itsy Bitsy Spider Vase

 Look away now if you don't like spiders! Sherwood Spider Vase - Side one The original spider vases, with the hand-painted black spider, were made during the Sherwood era , sometime between 1949 and 1954 at Waitakere. A rather realistic spider waits patiently for its next meal on a web strung between two branches. Pinecones sit at the base of this triangular vase.  Why do I like these vases? They remind me of webs sparkling with dew at dawn in our native garden we planted over twenty years ago. I try to be aware of them not only for their beauty, but because they're soooo sticky if you walk into one at head height. Never been one for spiders though, especially the huntsman that come in unexpectedly through our windows. I've only briefly met a white tail spider and that was inside the hood of my raincoat I'd just put on. Danny spotted it and told me, 'Stand Still!!
